Making A Covid-19 Vaccine Appointment in Taiwan Summer 2021

Usual disclaimer: Note the date of this blog post. As time goes by, things may change, so always try to find the most up to date information. Feel free to let me know if anything ever changes. If this article has Chinese characters / Pinyin and you are not sure about pronunciation, copy/paste the Chinese characters to Google Translate and use the text to voice feature. As a side note, the pronunciation of the neutral tone is usually not so good, but it should be close enough.

Registering the NHI card online

I just did it this very instant, so I'm writing this article while I still remember the process!

Once you have downloaded the NHI app (pracitcally all in Chinese)  and bound your NHI card to it, you are ready to make the appointment.

Open the app, on the home page (bottom left icon that looks like a house), you will see a list of options, and luckily, they have English translations. Select Vaccine Appointment.

Accept the disclaimer and you will be taken to a site that asks for your login credentials. In my case, it was my ARC number, and the password that I had chosen for the NHI Services Online site.

Once you're in, it should automatically display your ARC number and your name, if not, then here are the different fields you should see:

身分證號 Shēnfèn zhèng hào: your ID number (ARC)

Xìngmíng: your name as it appears on your Taiwan ID card.

Shǒujī hàomǎ: your cellphone number

Jiēzhǒng qūyù: where you want to get the vaccine. This is where you need to know how to recognize your city and district by their Chinese characters.

Taipei is 台北市 or also spelled 臺北市

New Taipei City is 新北市

Kaohsiung is 高雄市

Taichung is 台中市

Tainan is 台南市

There are too many districts for me to list them here, so I hope you can find the right one. If you look at your address on your ID card, and you want to choose the same city and district, the district would be the characters before 區 (district), and it is found after the city 市. In other words, the district are the characters between 市 and 區.

Of course, if you want to get vaccinated elsewhere, you can choose the city and district most convenient for you.

Last but not least, you have the option of choosing your vaccine preference (at the moment AZ and Moderna):

疫苗種類 Yìmiáo zhǒnglèi: vaccine type

Once the fields are filled, you accept the disclaimer:

我已閱讀並同意隱私權公告 Wǒ yǐ yuèdú bìng tóngyì yǐnsī quán gōnggào: I have read and agree to the privacy notice

then finally press confirm:

確認送出 Quèrèn sòngchū: confirm to send.

A new page that looks the same will open up with red text. Don't worry, there's no mistake; this is actually just the confirmation that you're on the queue. It will look like this

DATE TIME (the moment you pressed confirm)

You will also see the following text with your registration number below:

登記序號 Dēngjì xùhào: registration number

If you want to make modifications or cancel, you can press the following buttons:

修改登記 Xiūgǎi dēngjì: modify registration

Qǔxiāo dēngjì: cancel registration

That's it! Now, you play the waiting game!

You should eventually receive a text message from 1922 (should be displayed as such on your caller ID). Mine looked like this:

COVID-19公費AZ疫苗預約通知:序號XXXXXXXXXXX您好,請於7/27~7/29中午12點前至預約平台預約接種。

It basically shows the serial number (I marked it as X for privacy reasons) and it says to go back to the appointment platform (same platform that you used) and make an appointment within the time frame (between 7/27 and 7/29 for me).

When you log back on to the platform, you choose where you fill in whatever fields are required. It was all in Chinese, so using Google Translate will be very useful, or have someone help you. You'll get to choose from various available slots. I went in 2 hours after the registration system had opened and the first few days worth of slots were already taken. I chose the first one available. Once that's done, you're set! Again, don't mind the scary looking red text, it doesn't mean that you did anything wrong.

I hope this was helpful! I hope they'll make it more user friendly for non-Mandarin speakers by the time it's your turn!

If you're looking for Mandarin lessons, I highly recommend my teacher Jenny from JL Mandarin School
